History Being Made - A Tip for Obama's Speech

Woohoo! Barack Obama and Joe Biden are the official democratic ticket. Bill passed the torch, so to speak, and Hill's magnanimous motion during her state's roll call vote might finally put an end to the tradmed's insipid "Was it enough of an endorsement?" meme. But what about tonight?

Of course, this confirmation already adds to the historicity of his campaign, but I think it will really be remembered by his convention speech coming up tonight around 8 PM EST. You're not going to want to miss this one. He's a primetime political orator, and I'm confident that he's cooked up an excellent speech for this remarkable occasion. One thing I would recommend to Obama: talk about Katrina and Gustav. Highlight, in detail, one of the most clear and despicable failures of Republican governance and then warn about the impending catastrophe in the gulf. This will not only provide a solid line of attack and hopefully remind some southern voters how much Republicans actually appreciate them, but will also ensure that Obama stays in the news as the hurricane hits next week and damages are assessed. Staying in the media focus is key to obtaining a good convention bounce. Plus, it's probably a good thing to have political leaders actually giving the country a heads-up when a disaster is impending as opposed to just eventually reacting to it.

Anyway, perhaps I'm a bit punch-drunk off of the silly Republican swipes taken continuously by the cable punditzes, but I'm going to predict a 10% convention bounce for Obama once the convention hooplah is all said and done. I think the speech will be a big part of that; Obama can use it to get his ideas and vision across to many low-info. undecideds, and I think his generally impeccable delivery will drive it home. I can only hope those people are also smart/bored enough to change the channel before the talking heads inevitably begin criticizing the speech. Let's see if the polls next week bear me out...in any case, I'm psyched to see what Obama will say and do as he makes history out in Denver tonight. Find any undecideds you can and make them watch at least some of it; let's make that convention bounce a reality!
